Francesco Origgi attended the Veterinary School of the University of Milan and graduated in 1994, first of his class with honors (Lode). In 1995 he was awarded a fellowship training grant at the Istituto Zooprofilattico sperimentale della Lombardia e dell'Emilia (IZSLE) in Milan. He then worked as a private practitioner focusing on non-conventional animals from 1995 to 1998. In 1998 he was awarded a Fulbright fellowship and he was enrolled in the PhD program of the University of Florida under the mentorship of Professor Elliott Jacobson. He graduated in 2001 and he was then hired as post-doctoral research associate at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (HSR-Dibit) in Milan in the laboratory of human virology headed by Professor Paolo Lusso. During the post-doctoral years he also completed a post-graduate specialty training (Scuola di Specialita') in Laboratory animal medicine and science mentored by Professor Paola Dall'Ara and he graduated in 2006. At the end of the same year is he admitted to the residency program in veterinary anatomic pathology of the University of Florida that he completed in 2008 and from 2008 and 2009 is hired as clinical instructor in veterinary anatomic pathology by the University of Florida serving also as staff pathologist at Disney Animal’s Programs (Disney’s Animal Kingdom- Epcot’s Living Seas) headed by Dr Scott Terrell. Since 2010 he is the head of the wildlife diagnostic service at the Centre for Fish and Wildlife Health (FIWI- The Swiss National reference center for wildlife disease and pathology) of the University of Bern and since 2012 he has also an appointment in the Institute of Veterinary Bacteriology of the same University. Francesco Origgi is boarded in three professional specialties (American College of Veterinary Microbiologists-Virology-2007; American College of Veterinary Pathologists-2009; European College of Zoological Medicine-Herpetology-2014). In 2013 he was awarded the CL Davis Journal Award for the best veterinary pathology publication of the year. He has authored and coauthored several peer-reviewed international and national publications and book chapters. He has been an invited speaker at several national and international conferences and he is member of the editorial board of the Journal of herpetological medicine and surgery and of Veterinary pathology.
